Updated LEED credit interpretation (January 2015) means that more products with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can qualify for LEED credits. This new interpretation now allows certain equipment and machinery to qualify towards the 20 minimum product requirements in Option 1 of Building Products Disclosure and Optimization– Environmental Product Declarations, Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Sourcing of Raw Materials, and of Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Material Ingredients. It’s also important to note that if these products are included in Option 1 of a credit, they are not required to be included and do not apply towards credit in Option 2.

Equipment and machinery that now qualify include the following categories from the Building Products Listing Program:

• DIVISION 11 00 00 EQUIPMENT

• DIVISION 21 00 00 FIRE SUPPRESSION

• DIVISION 22 00 00 PLUMBING

• DIVISION 23 00 00 HEATING, VENTILATING, AND AIR-CONDITIONING (HVAC)

• DIVISION 25 00 00 INTEGRATED AUTOMATION

• DIVISION 26 00 00 ELECTRICAL

• DIVISION 27 00 00 COMMUNICATIONS

• DIVISION 28 00 00 ELECTRONIC SAFETY AND SECURITY

• Other special equipment such as elevators, escalators, process equipment, and fire suppression systems also contribute. To learn more about the full list of subcategories for each listed DIVISION, or to learn more about Environmental Product Declarations for your products, please reach out to your sales contact or email UL Environment at environment@ul.com.
